Riley Hospital Cardiac Stepdown Unit is a 24-bed unit that includes 6 designated NICU beds. Riley at IU Health is ranked among the top pediatric cardiovascular programs in the nation by U.S.News & World Report and others. We are also among the top 15 of high-volume heart programs in the nation for effective outcomes. Our Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeons have received the high honor of a Three Star Rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons in 2018.  

Nurses will assess, monitor, and document on high acuity cardiac patients from neonates to adults including: Congenital Heart Defect Patients, Neonatal Congenital Heart Defect Patients (Patients in NICU Cohort), Pre/Post-Cardiac Transplant Patients, Pre/Post-Op Cardiothoracic Surgery Patients, and Post-Cardiac Catheterization Patients. Other job skills include: 

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES 

• Requires current state of Indiana license as Registered Nurse. 
• Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. 
• Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies. 
• Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred. 
• Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.

Once hired to a department, alongside nursing orientation, all new graduate nurses in their first nursing role will have the opportunity to participate in a Nurse Residency Program called "Transition to IU Health Nursing Practice." The Nurse Residency program goals are to provide socialization and support, enhance clinical judgment, and promote professional development.
