Overview
This position provides genetic counseling for individuals and families seen via in-person and virtual clinics within the Cardiovascular Genetics Program. These clinics include independent genetic counseling and working as part of a care team with cardiac and/or genetics providers in both pediatric and adult care settings. Our program provides care for patients and families in the following areas and the specific areas that this position focuses on will be determined in part by the interests of the GC in this role: cardiomyopathy, aortopathy, lipids, electrophysiology, pulmonary hypertension, and general cardiovascular genetics.
This role will include clinical supervision genetic counseling graduate students in the Indiana University Genetic Counseling Graduate Program and working with graduate students on research studies as well as other clinical research projects.
Our Cardiovascular Genetics Program, the only comprehensive program in the state of Indiana, currently consists of 3 full-time cardiovascular GCs, a genetic counseling assistant, 2 geneticists, and several cardiologists. Additionally, there is an active basic science cardiovascular research team that overlaps and collaborates with our clinical team. The cardiovascular genetic counseling group utilizes our expertise to support and empower our patients through content expertise, family-based care, and genomics expertise. We seek to improve the understanding of and access to cardiovascular genetics for the public, medical professionals, and learners in IU/IU Health, the state of Indiana, and beyond. We work to create a collegial, professional environment where we can collaboratively work to achieve our goals. The Cardiovascular Genetics Program is part of the clinical team in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics. In addition to the team member mentioned above there are an additional twenty genetic counselors and thirteen medical geneticist providing care in such areas as general genetics, inpatient, cancer, metabolic, neurology, ophthalmology, and developmental pediatrics. Colleagues, genetic counseling team leads, and the Director of Clinical Genetic Counseling provide mentorship and ample opportunities for professional development both within the department, IU Health, and the greater genetic counseling community.
While cardiovascular genetic counseling experience is a plus, it is not necessary for this position. Experienced genetic counselors, newer graduates, and those currently enrolled in a master’s degree program with graduation in the spring of 2023 are welcome to apply.
