Job Description

Overview

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) will be a transformational leader that sets and promotes the mission, vision, and values of IU Health and advances contemporary nursing practice. The CNO will create a productive environment and ensure the delivery of safe, timely, efficient, effective, equitable, and patient centered care. The incumbent must articulate and embody the IU Health Way and lead through the IU Health Values of Team, Purpose, Compassion, and Excellence. Ensures and fosters a high level of collaboration within a highly matrixed team environment in the development, implementation, and maintenance of nursing strategic and operational priorities. Ensures leader development at all levels of the organization. Cares deeply about the nursing profession and the people who turn to IU Health for their care. Creates environments where team members are personally valued, professionally invested, and inspired by our patients and colleagues. Accountable for achievement of organizational outcomes on the IU Health Promise Dashboard; quality and safety improvements, care affordability, great patient experiences, and great team member experiences. Ongoing cultivation of evidenced-based decision making in clinical and leadership initiatives, shared –leadership structures, professional practice models, and continual process improvement. Creates a learning environment through implementation of evidence-based practice, clinical inquiry, dissemination of evidence through publication and presentation, and partnership with associated schools of nursing. Maintains a working knowledge of current clinical practice, regulatory and accreditation requirements. Possesses current knowledge of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet and/or Pathway to Excellence Programs and designation criteria. Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of healthcare economics and policy as well as the role of the governing bodies at the local, regional, and system level. Maintains productive working relationships with key stakeholders both internal and external to the organization. Involved professionally in regional and national activities through professional organizations, modeling and encouraging involvement.

Qualifications/knowledge/skills/abilities

  • Master's degree (Nursing, Health Administration or related field) required.
    • If master’s degree is not in nursing, a BSN is required.
  • Doctorate degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of progressive nursing leadership experience preferred.
  • Certification in administration preferred.
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of the nursing profession.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local regulatory agency guidelines and laws.
  • Experience leading in an ANCC designated entity preferred (Magnet or Pathway to Excellence).
  • Experience designing organizational structures to achieve business and operational results.
  • Requires the ability to embrace the mission, vision, and values of IU Health.    
  • Requires knowledge of state and federal laws relative to assigned area.    
  • Requires effective written and verbal communication skills.    
  • Requires problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Requires skills to develop physician leaders
  • Requires experience in physician peer review.
