Jay L. Hess, MD, PhD, MHSA , is the dean of Indiana University School of Medicine. In addition, he serves as one of four executive vice presidents of Indiana University and is charged with guiding the university’s clinical affairs strategy. Since becoming dean, he has overseen a 125 percent increase in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, led the school through a comprehensive curriculum reform and successful reaccreditation, and strengthened the relationship with IU Health, its primary clinical partner and one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers. A physician-scientist, Hess is driven to improve care for patients and is guided by a commitment to transforming health in Indiana and around the world.

The Senior Executive Advisor to the Dean/EVP (SEA) in the Office of the Executive Vice President of University Clinical Affairs (EVPUCA) and Dean of the School of Medicine supports the EVPUCA/Dean in a Chief of Staff capacity with directing, implementing, and monitoring the strategic agenda for the School of Medicine and increasing alignment with the Health Sciences Schools of Indiana University. On a day-to-day basis, this leader will deal with a wide range of disparate issues within the context of the "big picture", with wide authority to act on behalf of the EVPUCA/Dean. The SEA interacts heavily with senior leaders including the Executive Associate Deans, Vice Presidents, Chancellors, Deans, Chairs and IU Health executives and healthcare affiliate leadership, as well a wide range of external public and private partners on a diverse range of strategic, operational, political, and organizational issues.
