Overview
The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is a designated area within the hospital that allows our providers to monitor and evaluate the medical condition of patients who do not meet criteria for inpatient admission but are not well enough to go home or require further observation. The unit provides an effective, fast paced environment that allows you to connect with your patients and perfect your assessment skills.
Our CDU is a 10 bed, 23-hour observation unit that is a direct extension of our Level 3 Trauma Center Emergency Department. Our staff collaborates with our Advanced Practice Provider team to provide quick, yet individualized care to our patients. Our nurses are encouraged to think in hours instead of days to keep our patients moving and getting them home 2x faster than other inpatient areas. Our unit’s average length of stay is 16 hours in comparison to 40+ hours as an inpatient. This strategy can help patients go home safer and faster, while being more cost effective. Our CDU is located near the emergency department where the team monitors patients for 6-24 hours. We work alongside ED staff to ensure an advanced level of clinical competency, nursing judgment, teaching skills, and a commitment to improving the quality of patient care.
