IU North’s Post-Surgical unit, 5C, is a 31-bed post-surgical inpatient and medical overflow unit.  We are a fast-paced and specialized area that supports high volumes of surgical patients. Our nurses provide compassionate, specialized care to a variety of surgical patient populations including urological, gynecological, uro-gynecological, orthopedic, thyroid, bariatric and several others.  As a Registered Nurse you will work in collaboration with the hospitalist team, PT/OT, case management, patient/family liaison, and multiple other disciplines to ensure our patients are receiving excellent care. 

Nursing skills gained on this unit: 

  • Care of specialized post-surgical patients
  • Surgical wound care and dressing changes
  • Patient and family inclusion and education
  • Communication and collaboration with multiple patient services and support teams
  • Physical assessment and critical thinking skills 
  • Insertion of foley catheters, NG tubes, peripheral IV’s 
  • Phlebotomy  
  • Management and care of central lines including PICC’s, tunneled lines, and ports 
  • Improved communication skills with providers, PCA’s and others on the care team 
  • Opportunity to be a unit preceptor, charge nurse, or capstone preceptor  
  • Multiple opportunities to get involved in unit improvements and be the expert voice on unit changes

  • Multiple Daisy and Sunshine Award nominees in 2023
  • Certified Bariatric program
  • Excellent quality outcomes including no Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI’s) since 2020 and no Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI’s) since 2022

Available Shifts: 

  • Full-Time Night | Part-Time Night | Full-Time Day

Qualifications 

  • Requires Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred. 
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license. 
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing       program. 
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. 
  • Other Advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
