Job Description

The Director – Surgical Services, Bloomington position exists to support the clinical direction and management of the Surgical Services unit at the organization, with an emphasis on quality management and enhanced customer service. The Director provides the leadership and direction to develop, recommend and implement programs, policies, and procedures and standards within the assigned area. This leader will participate in the organization Health system ventures and planning. The Director will actively collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer. This position reports to the CNO and VP Patient Care Service, NCR.

Reports to: Vice President – Chief Operating Officer, Bloomington

Candidate Qualifications

Candidates for the position will be selected from a diverse pool and will be evaluated according to the following criteria and competencies.

  • Requires a Masters of Science degree in Nursing or comparable post graduate degree.
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Requires certification in area of specialty or leadership. If currently in Nursing Director position, certification is required by December 31, 2012. New hires into these positions require this certification within one year after hire date.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • Requires extensive nursing and leadership experience; which is typically gained through seven to ten years of progressive service.
  • Requires working knowledge of AAMI, ASPAN and AORN standards.
  • Requires ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Requires the ability to build effective working relationships with the physicians.
  • Requires an in-depth knowledge of state and national regulatory agency guidelines.
  • Requires a visionary with the ability to think in a positive and creative manner.
  • Requires the ability to lead quality improvement initiatives.
  • Requires knowledge and experience in finance; operations management; strategic planning and community relations.
  • Requires interpersonal; negotiation and presentation skills; with the ability to lead groups and programs.
  • Requires well developed administrative and management skills.
  • Requires knowledge of state and federal laws relative to assigned area.
  • Requires effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Requires problem-solving and analytical skills.
