Job Description

Overview

This position is responsible for managing inquiries concerning poison exposures received via a 24 hour emergency telephone line. The incumbent triages and provides accurate and complete management information to the public, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, emergency medical personnel, and other health care providers.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Triage: Triages incoming phone calls to ensure poison exposures receive priority assistance and documents all required case information in the computerized patient management system. Assesses probable level of toxicity by researching available databases for each poison exposure. Communicates with expert consultants as needed.

2. Treatment: Recommends and directs home management or initiates referral to appropriate medical facility. Notifies health care facilities of impending arrival, history and treatment recommendations. Follows up on each potentially toxic case to ensure effective treatment is provided.

3. Information: Answers questions pertaining to drug toxicity and medical information form calls where no poison exposure exists. Investigates media or other reports of toxic hazards to the public and dispenses accurate information and recommendations to requests for information about same.

4. Training: Assists in the development and presentation of education programs to the public on the topic of poison prevention and health care professionals on poison exposure management.

5. Project: Does one project either research or poison center operations related, per year in order to enhance own knowledge, the poison control field or poison center operations. Is responsible for reading designated articles, professional journals, etc. Attends Staff/Education Meetings to keep current with new development. Provides supervision and training to new employees and health care professional students during rotations through the Indiana Poison Center.

This position is mostly call-center work, but comes with cool opportunities! There’s opportunity to work up to 50% of shifts from home once certified as a CSPI. Ability to work to the top of the nurse license – assessing patients, recommending and helping direct their pharmacotherapy, frequent consultations from other healthcare providers as the expert in the care of poisoned patients. Opportunities to do clinical research, do QI or public health projects, and write clinical or management guidelines, if desired. The department pays for the CSPI exam, and once a staff member is credentialed, one all-expenses-paid trip to NACCT, the annual toxicology conference. The department also pays for NACCT attendance if they are on a national committee or have a poster accepted.

Shift Scheduling: It is full-time evenings, usually 1200-0000 or 1300-0100, but may require an occasional partial night shift and may offer occasional day shifts. There is a small on-call requirement, 3 x 24-hour shifts per 6-week schedule block. RN candidates are required to have 3-5 years of bedside experience in an ICU or ED.

 

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Requires current state of Indiana license as Registered Nurse.
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • 3-5 years of bedside experience in an ICU or ED required
