Provides service and support before, during, and after surgical procedures; procures and preserves organs for transplantation; and assures the viability of organs being stored. Ensures the presence and proper arrangement of surgical equipment, supplies and instrumentation in the operating room prior to each operation. Provides assistance to the surgeon in the operating room as allowed by professional and legal standards. Assists in the turnover of the operating room after the procedure ensuring proper routing and/or processing of all specimens, equipment, instrumentation and supplies. Works as a member of the surgical team with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel. Assists in the management of the donor to ensure viability of the organs for transplant. Stocks and maintains equipment and supplies. Creates and maintains procurement medical records system. Assists physicians in surgery at donor sites and transplant center, prepares perfusate solution, implements in situ and bench fluid preservation flush of all organs, removes accessory organs, nodes, arteries and veins as deemed necessary for research, serology or transplantation, sutures wounds, cannulates and perfuses kidneys on pump, performs kidney biopsies for frozen section by Pathology. Sterilizes packages and transports all abdominal organs obtained by donation and/or shipped. Initiates and completes United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) regulatory forms in compliance with UNOS regulations. Enters, compiles and maintains data on pre- and post-transplant patients for the Transplant Center computerized database. Offers support and assistance to the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, including completion of recipient follow-up forms.

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Requires certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist obtained from the NBSTSA.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • Requires documentation of 25 Contact Hours of Continuing Education.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Requires knowledge of name and function of surgical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Requires knowledge of various surgical procedures in order to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and to recognize the problems encountered by the surgeons.
  • Requires strict adherence to policies and regulations regarding maintenance of sterile field.
  • Requires basic computer skills.
