Job Description

Overview

Indiana University Health is Indiana’s most comprehensive health system, with 16 hospitals and more than 34,000 team members serving Hoosiers across the state. We’re looking for team members who are inspired by challenging and meaningful work for the good of every patient. People who are compassionate and serve with a purpose. Job Details

Bridging the gap between student and professional nurse is a critical part of your nursing journey. Our team at Riley Hospital wants to walk alongside you on the path to becoming a truly best-in-class nurse.   We’re looking for current nursing students entering their senior year who will be graduating in 2022.

What is the IU Health Patient Care Internship “PCI” Program?

This is a six-week summer intensive program consisting of interactive classroom, unit time and weekly connection meetings with other PCIs. We are committed to nurturing the development of the next generation of nursing professionals and this program is a fantastic way to increase critical thinking, prioritization and socialization! We believe that phenomenal nurses are built and support and inspiration is critical to the development of a new nurse.

By participating in the PCI program, nursing students have an opportunity to work with unit leadership on an Evidence Based Practice project to positively impact patient care.

PCIs are designated an RN mentor throughout the program that will support the PCI and facilitate the learning process. The program begins June 1, 2020 and does involve a full-time commitment during the initial 6-week period of the program. After the 6-week intensive, the PCI will work on the unit functioning as a Patient Care Assistant (PCA). The work requirement after the summer intensive is flexible and requires a minimum of 24 hours/every 6-week scheduling period.

Qualifications/knowledge/skills/abilities

  • Requires PCI be actively enrolled as a senior level student in a BSN nursing education program that is accredited by a national organization. For example, the Accreditation Commission For Education in Nursing (ACEN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Requires completion of BSN program within 12-16 months of starting PCI program.
  • A PCI may remain in the job after graduation from the BSN accredited program as long as the NCLEX exam has not been attempted two times without passing/success.
  • Requires current Basic Life Support certification through the AHA or attainment at the completion of the IU Health PCA education program. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • Requires knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of the patients served.
  • Requires ability to apply the organization's personnel policies and procedures.
  • Requires up to date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
  • Requires proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Requires constant mental awareness and the ability to withstand a high level of tension and stress.
  • Requires ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent and varied interruptions and variable noise levels.
