Job Description

Overview

The Chief Medical Officer– Community Health (CMO – CH) is responsible for planning, developing, catalyzing implementation, and evaluating Indiana University Health’s (IUH) community health programs in response to identified community needs. The incumbent is expected to leverage IU Health’s delivery system of care and broaden the scope and range of services programs and programming that offer primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention for medical, behavioral and psychosocial conditions, initially focused on four community health initiatives; reducing infant mortality, improving behavioral health, combatting tobacco addiction, reducing obesity and addressing social determinants of health.

Community Health is an integral part of the System Health Solutions (SHS) division within Indiana University Heath.  SHS was formed in 2015 and is charged with making high quality care more accessible and affordable, creating a more seamless customer experience and developing new care models and capabilities that improve health of our patients and communities.

The CMO – CH will develop culturally competent programs to engage individuals, families, communities, providers and stakeholders in their journey to health and well-being. This role interfaces with senior leadership, front-line team members, executes corporate development strategy, and drives change initiatives across the system and community to optimize organizational potential. The role will invest and actively engage with community organizations to improve the health of Hoosiers and partner with local ‘grassroots’ efforts to serve communities in IU Health’s regions and pursue policy advocacy to support community health priorities. The incumbent will be the external spokesperson, representing IU Health Community Health and ensure stakeholder awareness, alignment, and support of community health initiatives. This position reports to the SVP of Population Health.

The candidate for this role will be an accomplished healthcare executive who can work effectively in a highly matrixed and relationship-driven culture.  The candidate must be a visionary leader who knows how to effectively drive change in a complex and distributed yet system-oriented environment.  The VP – CH must embody IU Health’s mission, embrace its vision and must lead through respect, humility, and intellectual curiosity. 

  • Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy Degree, completion of ACGME accredited residency, active medical license and board certification is recommended. 
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in Public Health, Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or related field is required. 
  • At least ten years of experience in a health-related environment is required.  Experience in a variety of setting (payer, provider, academe) is highly desirable. 
  • Experience in partnering with providers, delivery systems, payers, legislatures, state and community leaders, and leaders of other organizations to accomplish shared goals and objectives. 
  • Strong demonstrated transformational and complex, matrixed leadership skills (inspiring, problem solving, communication across multiple organizations, executing) to champion achieving the vision of the organization. 
  • Requires experience managing multiple complex projects involving multiple customers, interests and goals. 
  • Strong blend of management skills and technical expertise demonstrated by superior planning, decision-making, negotiation, leadership, and financial management skills/knowledge. 
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with all levels of employees, management, and community leaders. A proven leader who is an effective, creative and visionary problem solver. 
  • A proven leader able to recruit, develop, and mentor a talented team capable of supporting future growth. Demonstrated leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace and community. 
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local regulatory agency guidelines and laws.
