Position Summary

The Vice President of Strategy and Planning will be a key member of the Riley senior leadership team and will report to the President of Riley with a matrixed relationship to IU Health’s system strategy and business development team. This leader will interface with senior business and physician leaders, community leaders, and front-line team members to develop the maternal and pediatric healthcare organization, and drive change initiatives across the system. The Vice President leads work to optimize organization potential and to achieve strategic and operational objectives. They will be empowered to drive change in a complex and distributed yet system-oriented care environment. This leader will have the opportunity to develop growth strategies, including associated strategic, business, and capital plans. They will instill financial accountability across all teams and projects, as well as manage outcomes. The Vice President will maintain and communicate a vision for Riley’s strategic and operational objectives and demonstrate consistency in meeting their commitments. They will execute on Riley’s five-year strategic plan, implement the health system provider network strategy, behavioral health strategy, and center for excellence. This leader will embody IU Health's values, embrace its vision and mission and lead through respect, humility, and intellectual curiosity.

Additional opportunities for the Vice President of Strategy and Planning include:

  • Execute and oversee Riley’s five-year pediatric strategic plan, formalize and implement the Riley Children’s Health referring provider network strategy, and build on new strategies such as health equity and population health capabilities.
  • Establish the Riley Children’s Health Center for Innovation as part of the comprehensive pediatric research hospital strategy.
  • Serve as a health system partnership leader for IU Health and non-IU Health Care Alliance partners.
  • Partner with Riley’s clinicians and leadership team to establish a maternal and newborn behavioral health communication collaborative.
  • Champion the development, execution, and continuous improvement of a strategic analytics platform.
  • Drive accountability and oversee progress of Riley’s operational and strategic pillars.

Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health is honored to be ranked among the top children's hospitals in the country by the U.S. News & World Report. In 2017-18, Riley at IU Health ranked in 10 out of the 10 categories. Riley remains the only nationally ranked children's hospital in Indiana and ranks among the top 50 children's hospitals in the country.

Key Relationships

Reports to: President – Riley Children’s Health   

Direct reports: 1 Director level

Candidate Qualifications

Candidates for the position will be selected from a diverse pool and will be evaluated according to the following criteria and competencies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree is required.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience is required. 5-7 years of strategy and planning leadership experience is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a complex, matrixed health system (pediatric experience ideal).
  • Clinical operational management experience at the Director or above level.
  • Knowledge and experience in strategy, planning, operations, finance, and community relations, preferably in an academic health system.
  • Demonstrated transformational leadership skills in a matrixed environment to champion leading to preeminence.
  • Experience managing multiple complex simultaneous projects involving multiple customers, interests and goals.
  • Rapport builder with ability to move between team members, physicians, IU Health senior leaders, community leaders, patients and family members with grace and humility.
  • Management skills and technical expertise that demonstrates decision-making, negotiation, financial management and operational management.
  • Communication skills (written and oral) that result in clear, concise and inspirational and informative understanding.
  • Risk taker, promoting and nurturing creativity to help Riley lead in the marketplace.
  • Ability to attract, recruit, develop, mentor and retain a top-notch team that reflects diversity of our patients, our clinicians, the patients and communities we serve.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state and local regulatory agency laws, regulations and guidelines.
  • Person of ethics and integrity with visible commitment to mission and values of IU Health.
