The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at IU Health offer some of the most comprehensive services in Indiana! Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our laboratory perform more than 1 million tests a year. The Clinical Microbiology department test menu encompasses Bacteriology, Virology, Serology, Mycology, and Parasitology specialties. Job Summary

The successful Microbiology supervisor candidate will serve under the general direction of the Microbiology Laboratory Manager. The candidate oversees and coordinates daily functions, staff related activities, ensures the provision of high-quality laboratory services in accordance with the department standards and protocols, and a wide variety of administrative and technical activities to ensure the efficient operation of the clinical laboratory.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assume all first line responsibilities of staff related issues, escalate appropriate issues to Manager. Supervises and implement staff scheduling.
  • Actively participate in staff recruitment and conduct interviews. Provides orientation to new employees and/or identifies training needs and ensures that employees receive appropriate in-service training and education for their job responsibilities.
  •  Continually evaluates, monitors, and documents staff competency, performance, couching, and perform annual performance appraisals.
  • Adheres to all human resource practices and policies. Lead, guide, motivate staff and colleagues to ensure a great work environment
  • Provides technical, administrative, and logistical instruction and support to staff members.
  • Ensures quality control and follow-up procedures are developed and implemented.
  • Collects and analyzes data and prepares a variety of special and recurring analyses and reports.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate publications and communication/interaction with subject matter experts.
  • Performs other duties as requested by laboratory leadership

 

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in medical technology, Chemical, Physical or Biological Science is required. Master’s in medical technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science preferred.
  • Requires 3-5 years of training/experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty. Coursework/ education and experience in the area of Microbiology specialization highly preferred.
  • Requires appropriate certification by ASCP, AMT, NCA or equivalent certification.
  •  1-2 years of supervisory experience with the skills necessary to manage Medical Technologist and other laboratory staff in a high-volume testing laboratory preferred.  
  • Requires great interpersonal skills and human centered leadership by truly understanding people’s experiences, ability to be creative and collaborative in solution development.
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of standard operating procedures and testing techniques.
  • Requires ability to troubleshoot equipment and analyze technical problems, oversees remedial actions and make sure they are resolved in accordance with established laboratory policies.
  • Requires knowledge of state and federal regulations. Demonstrates competence in inspection standards and checklist changes.
