The Infusion Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Indiana University Health, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance, complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards, and adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.  The registered professional infusion nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence-based care along the care continuum, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The clinical nurse participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve outcomes and enhance operational efficiency.   

 

Job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Efficiently manage a multi-patient assignment in a fast-paced infusion center. 
  • Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central venous access devices and other delivering systems.
  • Administer chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy drug regimens while following OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste, and other materials potentially infected with bloodborne pathogens.
  • Provide education and support to patient and family members regarding identified health needs, health care activities, and medication effects and contraindications. 
  • Recognize when referrals to support services, such as social work, are necessary. 
  • Communicate effectively and collaboratively with various members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Accurately document all elements of care in the patient's medical record.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Requires current state of Indiana license as Registered Nurse.
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • 3 years of infusion experience is preferred, but not required. 
  • OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) certification is a perk.
