Job Description


The Director, Community Health, Outreach and Engagement will be responsible for developing and successfully implementing an aligned, comprehensive community engagement strategy, work plan, and all key outreach and engagement initiatives/activities on behalf of the entire Community Health division and the IU Health system (all hospitals & all regions) that will leverage following priorities in the communities we serve:

  • Behavioral Health & Substance Use Disorder
  • Infant and Maternal Health
  • Tobacco/Nicotine Cessation
  • Hypertension

The leader will also align the community engagement strategy across the system to support identified social determinants of health concerns and community benefit activities in response to the community health needs assessment.  The leader will represent the Community Health division & IU Health to the community at large with respect to community health outreach and engagement activities.

In addition to developing and implementing a successful community engagement strategy, the leader will build an infrastructure with aligned key actions/plans and metrics to achieve success.  The leader will be responsible for developing and expanding relevant outreach opportunities, growing the community impact and reach of these engagements, and analyzing data and metrics to evaluate, measure and make recommendations for improvement and community impact.  The leader will be responsible for successfully developing, monitoring, growing and maintaining relevant community-based relationships & partnerships (i.e. faith based, non-profit, grass roots, community coalitions/alliances, etc) that not only align with the priority areas, but simultaneously build credibility and trust of IUH among community stakeholders in effort to advance the impact on the patients, communities served and the state of Indiana.   The leader must be able to establish credibility and build relationships with diverse communities and stakeholders in an authentic way that includes the voice of the community.

Additional key areas of focus:

  • Plan & implement community-based health screenings, vaccine & medical care opportunities in alignment with clinical priorities and community needs
  • Devise & implement a community health worker strategy to deploy the work of health priorities to the community at large and in communities most in need
  • Oversee strategy & activities around community grant administration aligned with health priorities & community benefit
  • Plan & implement system Days of Service across the system in alignment with health priorities & community needs

The leader will report to the VP, Community Health Operations and will have project management support to lead the work. The leader will also work alongside other Community Health department directors, health equity leaders, operational partners, various IU Health department leaders, and external stakeholders in a collaborative format to engage and outreach to the community.  The leader will be able to effectively lead strategy and operational excellence with influence across the IU Health system and greater community to ensure alignment and community impact.  Other related duties will be assigned as needed.

Through its 16 hospitals (a mix of urban, suburban and rural facilities), IU Health offers a full range of specialty and primary care services for children and adults.  Community Health is an integral part of the System Health Solutions (SHS) division within Indiana University Heath.  The Community Health division improves the health and health equity of IU Health patients, communities, and the state of Indiana SHS was formed in 2015 and is charged with making high quality care more accessible and affordable, creating a more seamless customer experience, and developing new care models and capabilities that improve health of our patients and communities


  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 7 - 10 years of experience in healthcare, community outreach/engagement, community relations, health programming, or public health
  • Experience in healthcare leadership or relevant leadership experience preferred
  • Knowledge or experience in public health, community outreach, community relations, community building preferred
  • Strong track record of building credible relationships and partnerships with the community and among diverse stakeholders
  • Must be equally skilled at strategy development and operations – with a proven track record of managing and leading teams focused on strategy, execution, process improvement, and goal attainment
  • Skilled at data analysis and utilization of data and trends to inform decision making
  • Able to build and monitor successful relationships, coalitions and partnerships with key internal and community stakeholders
  • Must have demonstrated experience of delivering results in a matrix environment
  • Must demonstrate strong skills in organization, communication, and results driven leadership
  • Able to balance and deliver results in an environment with multiple competing priorities
  • Able to inspire teams, set a vision, drive outcomes and do so through influence (versus authority or direct reporting lines)
