Overview

The Director of Operations for Molecular Pathology and Microbiology leads, plans, and administers lab services for the entire IU Health system, in partnership and coordination a team of doctoral-level microbiologists & pathologists. The Indiana University (IU) Health Division of Clinical Microbiology, located within the IU Health Pathology Laboratory in downtown Indianapolis, IN, is a state-of-the-art facility that performs comprehensive diagnostic infectious disease testing for all IU Health hospitals, clinics, and numerous non-IU Health patient care providers. The Division uses the latest technologies, including rapid molecular diagnostic platforms, to identify and characterize disease-causing microorganisms. This laboratory is led by a dedicated, board-certified team of doctoral-level microbiologists, pathologists, and medical laboratory professionals who are committed to providing the best possible care to our clients and patients. The Division also participates in infectious disease research, trains numerous medical laboratory science students each year, hosts two accredited doctoral fellowship programs, and contributes to the IU Health Infectious Disease Pharmacy residency, the IU School of Medicine pathology residency, and two clinical infectious disease fellowship programs. Annually, the division of Microbiology tests more than 800,000 patient specimens and Molecular tests more than 400,000 patient specimens, resulting in over 1 million tests per year.

This Director will lead a forward-thinking team including lab professionals, technicians, and non-technical team members in diagnostic work and treatment of patients. Alongside the Medical Director and System Laboratory Leadership, the director will oversee the ongoing analysis, development, and implementation of methods and systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the lab. This leader will identify and implement best practices for the system in areas such as laboratory technology and instrumentation, physician satisfaction, quality and regulatory, lean transformation and budget optimization. The team is continually expanding its offerings and building a robust outreach program.

Additional opportunities include:

  • Mobilizing and motivating a team of 100+ team members locally to demonstrably improve performance across clinical quality and safety, patient satisfaction, team engagement, and operational/financial areas.
  • Collaborating with other laboratory directors (Core Lab Director and Transfusion Medicine Director) to develop robust strategies that will counter current disruptive market forces and ensure the successful operation of the lab.
  • Engaging with leadership and front-line team members, executing an organizational development strategy, and driving change initiatives across the system.
  • Partnering with senior administrative and clinical leadership to evaluate and execute internal and external strategic partnerships.
  • Undertaking a large infrastructure project to improve laboratory efficiency and facilitate implementation of total laboratory automation.
  • Participating in the design and execution of a fully-renovated microbiology lab of the future (anticipated 2024).

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology or related field and an MT-ASCP or equivalent certification required.
  • 5+ years of relevant leadership experience in a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Strong blend of management skills and technical expertise demonstrated by superior planning, decision-making, negotiation, leadership and financial management skills/knowledge.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with all levels of team members, leaders, and community members.
  • A proven leader of people is able to recruit, develop, organize. and mentor a top-notch team capable of supporting future growth and has demonstrated leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace and community.
  • Knowledge of industry issues as well as demonstrated experience and results leading change initiatives such as the transition from volume based to value-based economics, accountable care and insurance/population risk models.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local regulatory agency guidelines and laws.
