Summary

Under the supervision of the practice manager and physician leader, performs duties associated with patient care on accordance with organizational standards.  Assures completeness of order procedures and treatments, assures smooth patient flow, instructs patients concerning procedures, treatments and needs, ensures medical orders and referral are carried out accurately and in a timely manner.  Performs registration and scheduling activities per organization and departmental procedures, maintains EMR files and performs general front office functions as needed.  May perform computerized physician order entry, only if directed by assigned physician.  Expected to precept other MA team members or externs as requested by leadership.

Clinical Practice - Performs direct patient care services utilizing appropriate techniques and procedures as defined by the department.  Under the direction of a provider, the medical assistant can provide education, training and support to patient/family to assist with treatment requirements, discharge planning and home programming.  Strives to meet and exceed individual/patient/family and other customer expectations.  Assists team leaders with scheduling, as needed.

Ethical Practice - Demonstrates the highest level of confidentiality standards in handling of customer relations, medical and prescription records and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.  Maintains confidentiality as appropriate, earns trust and respect of others, and exhibits behaviors that express the ethical practice of a healthcare organization.

Relationship Building and Customer Care – Establishes and maintains respectful working relations with internal and external customers by being courteous and helpful in all interactions.  Shows appreciation and respect for customers’ needs, expectations, and perspectives.  Represents one’s organization by demonstrating behaviors that reflect and attitude of customer service, responsiveness and concern.

Safety Awareness – Demonstrates appropriate use of equipment and consistently follows safety procedures to protect oneself, coworkers, customers, and the public.

Quality Assurance – Maintains a consistent, high level of quality outcomes by adhering to every stage of the process, continuously planning, and systematically measuring the effectiveness of outcomes.

Training/Patient Education – Acts as a preceptor and share knowledge and expertise to facilitate the learning of others.  Relay patient education, medical direction and treatment advice as instructed by a licensed health care practitioner, including provider approved, pre-printed education materials.

Adaptability – Adapts to changes in job demands, work priorities, and organization structure without adverse effects on job performance.  Takes guidance and instruction from leaders and implements accordingly. 

 

Daily Tasks/Expectations

  • Answer the phone, timely and professionally.
  • Manage Virtual Visits and pre-visit work to ensure smooth visit for both the provider and the patient.
  • Schedule new patient or follow up visits as appropriate.
  • Work from the Cerner pools; assigning tasks and completing timely.
  • Preview clinic schedules.  Move patients when possible to ensure full clinics for providers.
  • Help manage OR block time to ensure we are not missing/losing time.
  • Help in clinic when needed.

Assures completeness of ordered procedures and treatments, assures smooth patient flow, performs general lab work, instructs patients concerning procedures, treatments and needs, and ensures medical orders and referrals are carried out accurately and in a timely manner. Performs registration and scheduling activities per organizational and departmental procedures. Maintains EMR files and performs general front office functions as needed. May perform computerized physician order entry, only if directed by assigned physician. May precept current MA team members or MA Externs as requested by leadership.

 AHA Basic Life Support for healthcare workers certification required. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Graduation from a Medical Assistant program required.
• Knowledge of OSHA, CLIA, and ADA required.
• TB validated (to administer or read) or validation obtained within 6 months of hire may be required.
• Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding preferred.
• Knowledge of Business Unit Quality Programs, Meaningful Use and Standard Work Programs and concepts within 6 months of hire.
• Knowledge of standard laboratory and medical procedures.
• Knowledge of insurance plans and third-party payers.
• Ability to master standard clinical competencies per current Clinical policy, Point of Care and Skills Competency checklists.
• Requires basic math and accurate data collection and entry skills.
